In my early years of writing about comedy, I would sometimes get demo reels on VHS from sketch or stand-up comedians. I kept every one of them, and in cases where I can get permission from the artists to do so, I will be releasing them with a little bit of my own commentary.
This video has made me laugh for about 20 years. I regular reference the line, “Let’s go runnin’,” maybe once or twice a month for the past couple of decades. The players are Chris Coxen and Nate Johnson, known for a period of maybe five or six years from around 2003 to 2006 as Coxen and Johnson. They started their comedy partnership writing on The Walsh Brothers’s Great and Secret Show at ImprovBoston. That was one of the most consistently entertaining shows of the era, featuring some of the funniest people in the scene at the time. I am thrilled to be able to bring this video to you. Earlier today, June 27, 2025, I tried to explain what this was and why I thought it was funny, and I think I came off as a fawning, inarticulate idiot. “It’s funny, cuz, you know, Chris is running all over the place but he can’t outrun this guy who’s lumbering around with the remnants of a six-pack, and, you know, it’s funny.” Better just to show it to you. I think you’ll understand.
